Shooting in New York

The city that sets the pace for contemporary art. New York brings a boldness and directness to our work that is impossible to replicate anywhere else.

What to expect

Energy, honesty, and extraordinary light

New York is one of our most in-demand locations. We travel to the city two to three times a year, running week-long shoot blocks that allow us to work with participants from across the tri-state area and beyond. The energy that people bring to shoots in New York is something special -- there is a confidence and directness that comes through in every frame.

We work in private studio spaces in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Our preferred locations are in Williamsburg, Bushwick, and the Lower East Side, where we have access to loft studios with soaring ceilings and the kind of industrial natural light that makes New York a photographer's city. These are fully private spaces with controlled access, comfortable amenities, and no interruptions.

For couples sessions, we occasionally work in boutique hotel suites in Manhattan and Brooklyn Heights. The intimacy of the Sunday Morning project calls for spaces that feel lived-in and warm, and New York's hotel scene offers exactly that. Every space is visited and approved before we book a single session there.

The creative landscape

New York and the body in contemporary art

New York's relationship with the body in art is long, complex, and unapologetic. From the queer photography of the 1980s downtown scene to the contemporary work shown at the International Center of Photography, the city has always been a place where artists push at the boundaries of how we see and represent the human form. That tradition of fearlessness is something we draw on every time we shoot here.

The body positivity movement has deep roots in New York. The city's activism around fat liberation, disability visibility, and queer self-representation means our participants here often come with a particularly articulate sense of what being photographed means to them. The conversations we have during New York shoots are some of the most meaningful we experience anywhere in the world.

New York is also where some of our most diverse participant groups have come together. The city's extraordinary range of communities, cultures, and lived experiences means that every shoot block produces images that are genuinely representative. People travel from New Jersey, Connecticut, upstate New York, and even further afield to shoot with us during our NYC sessions.

We are actively building relationships with gallery spaces in Brooklyn and Manhattan for potential exhibition opportunities. New York's gallery ecosystem is unparalleled, and showing our work in the city where so many of our participants live is a priority for us as we grow.

Practical details

How a New York shoot works

The process begins the same way as all Cesare House shoots: you apply, we review your application, and if it is a good fit we schedule an introductory video call. This call is relaxed and informal -- it is as much for you to ask questions as it is for us to get to know you. Once we are both comfortable, we will offer you a slot during our next New York session.

A typical shoot lasts between two and three hours. We keep the pace gentle and collaborative. You will never be asked to do anything you have not agreed to in advance. Our safety protocols are the same worldwide, and our New York shoots include an intimacy coordinator for all sessions involving nudity or couples work.

We pay the same rate globally. Whether you shoot with us in London, Berlin, or New York, the compensation is identical. Payment is made on the day. We do not believe in regional pricing that undervalues anyone's participation.

If you are based outside New York but would like to shoot with us during one of our trips, we encourage you to apply. We have worked with participants who have travelled from Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, and even further. We will do our best to accommodate scheduling needs, and we announce our New York dates well in advance.

"I've lived in New York for twelve years and done a lot of creative projects, but nothing like this. The team flew in from London and treated the whole thing with more care and intention than anything I've experienced locally. I would absolutely do it again."

-- Marcus, New York shoot participant
